Auto Lights not auto ?

Post Auto Lights not auto ? 

Hi, have just got our A200 and love it. Very happy to drive it and have already had one close call from a very large rock falling off a truck coming in the opposite direction. Unfortunately the bonnet now has a big dent and scratch, but if we were driving any other car it would have gone straight through the windscreen ! Anyway, we are having trouble understanding the Auto Lights. If we switch them to Auto during daylight, they the come on. I have changed the Manual/Always on setting to manual but still no change in how the lights behave. Is it the sensor ? Advice ?

Do you have an owner manual? but i suspect, it is the sensor.
