I have ml320 - 2002 need help with waterpump replacement. what kind of tools do I need? which way will 36 mm nut open. I called the dealership they say its just regular thread while some posts say its a reverse thread. also if you know how to hold the pully the pin wrench cost 120 bucks, which defeats the purpose of "do it yourself"
thanks in advance.

Figured it out myself....this is for you
Tools required for the Job
1. Flat Screw driver
2. Tool Kit #60 --Fan Clutch removal kit from Checker autos (free rental)
(see pic 1_tools, (see pic 2_tools)
3. “E” Type socket Set (see pic 5_tools2)
4. Star Bit set (see pic 5_tools)
5. 3 feet long 2_3” diameter pipe for leverage (or one pound of Kryptonite)
6. ¾” breaker bar
7. 1/2 “ regular socket wrench
8. An empty pale or some sort of tub for access water
9. 10mm socket
10. 17 mm socket
Parts
1. Water Pump
2. Seal/gasket
3. Silicon sealant (especially made for water pump seals)
Steps1- Remove fan shroud by using 10mm socket.
2- Screws are located at each bottom corner of that plastic shroud.
3- Make sure to remove the clips
4- Disconnect the hose to release coolant (see pic. 6)
5- Remove engine cover for extra room see pic. 7)
6- Remove Belt (see pic 9) you would need 17mm socket or adjustable wrench to shift the adjuster pulley by turning it anticlockwise.
7- Picture to simply shows exposed water pump without belt. (see pi c 8)
8- The toughest part in this whole process is to open that 36MM Fan nut. Use those rented tools (pic 3) to hold the Fan pulley (use 2 -1/8”), use 36mm open wrench
to with the extension of pipe to turn the nut counter clock wise (regular thread).
9- Pic 10 simply show the fan being removed if you have accomplished this stage consider yourself close to be done
Note some post mentioned it’s a reverse thread but it is NOT TRUE for 2002 model, I spent 8 hours trying to open it with reverse but it was just another nut after all
10- Now starts the actual removal of the water pump using flat screw driver remove the cover on that pulley so you can get to the screw behind. (see Pic 11)
11- Using Star bits remove the bolts (see pic 12)
12- Remove rest of the bolts using “E” type sockets (from around the water pump)
Note:- A word of advice from my 13 year old son--- Keep putting the bolts back in the new water pump as you remove them from the car. Once all the bolts are removed simply remove the old water pump out of the car. Lay the old water pump on the ground and now put back all the nuts in it…..this way you won’t miss any when you putting them back on.
13- Clean the surface on the engine where the water pump goes.
14- Put the sealant on one side of the gaskets and attach it with water pump.
15- Once the gasket is put on the new water pump then put the sealant on the other side as well. (make sure don’t put too much on….one small tube should be enough for both sides)
16- Once the gasket with the sealant is on then you can simply attach it to the engine
17- Start taking the bolts form your old pump one at a time and tightened them just with hand first. Make sure you tightened them evenly so won’t break them by tightening them too much at first (at one side only). Once all the bolts are in tighten them with medium force and then use just a little bit more ....make sure your over tightening may cause the slippage since bolt is only being tightened in the aluminum block. A side not use the similar force that you have applied to open.
18- In reverse order put everything back together and you are done with $800 dollar job in 3 hours later.
19- Hope it was a help send me a note if you have question (awq7@hotmail.com). Please do it at your own risk. These were the steps I have taken to do the job. …………q :boogie: :boogie: :boogie: :boogie:
