Post need help...!

I have a 95 300 E, today i was driving, low on gas so i pull in to the station fill it up and leave. Driving around a little bit i stop at the bank and then i pull out and it almost feels like my car is going to stall. btw my car is not manual. so the engine light comes on and i pull over nothin weird pop the hood everythings sweet. Pull out and it starts to stutter again. under 3,000rpm. This has never happen before so i take it to a local friend that helps me work on my car. He takes it for a spin feels the same thing also hears a lil popping noise.. So he thinks that it's a little water in the gas that i put in. So we put in a additive to the gas to get rid of the water. Drive around some more and find out some new things only on load does it do this stuttering not in netural and that my rpm's are sticking at diffrent spots when the reves fall.
would water do all this? if not what could it be?

Thanks in advance

where do you think is the popping noise came from? inside the engine? if it is, pre-detonation. try to use higher octane and have your car checked for fault codes to prevent severe engine damage.
