Garage Cabinets, Garage Storage, and Garage Organization

Hey,
I have a problem with the car - reverses fine but when in drive or any forward gear the revs die away and there is no real drive - engine revs rise then fall away - as if strangled - but it never actually stalls.........is it the MAF or something like that?

Any ideas gratefully received

what was your idling rpm? does it happen when hot or cold?

i have a feeling it's a vacuum leak. maybe on the regeneration valve or on the injectors or somewhere on the intake manifold. check the vacuum hoses or try spraying on the suspected areas and observe the engine running behavior if it changes. also, you might consider adjusting the idle speed. other causes are defective fuel pump.

Don't know much about the auto box, but when the car goes into limp mode it still drives like normal.

We had a very similar problem several years ago on our 1999 300E turbodiesel.
The problem gave the exact  same symptoms you are seeing.

In our case, it was a too sensitive brake light switch.
Whenever we would accelerate from a stop, the engine would start to speed up, then as the car accelerated, the engine would start to run much slower, even when we were pressing the accelerator further, to try to accelerate.   It turns out that the brake pedal would twitch just enough, without anyone pressing it, that the car would think we were trying to slow down.

It took several trips to the M-B dealership, to find the cause and then fix this problem.   Has not been any problem, since, after ~ 97k miles.   Before this problem, M-B in warranty, had replaced the brake light switch, therefore the adjustment was incorrect.   Now it's fine.
